Applicants are invited for the post of Consultant Acute Medicine. We’re dedicated to creating a sustainable department for high-quality patient care and work-life balance. New consultants will have 2.5 SPAs in their first year. Applicants need GMC Specialist Register or CCT / EU equivalent within six months.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide consultant services to hospital for illness prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and department functioning.
  • Cover out-of-hours duties and colleagues’ leaves.
  • Supervise junior medical staff, teach, and engage in medical audit, CPD, and research.
  • Participate in Clinical Governance and potential managerial tasks.
  • Collaborate with Trust for additional services as agreed.
  • Willingness for extra professional responsibilities.
  • Ensure equal treatment and cooperation per Equal Opportunities Policy.

Candidates should have MRCP, a CCST, and be listed on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of admission. Proficiency in undergraduate teaching and general medicine is advantageous. Nurturing sub-specialty interests aligning with service priorities is encouraged. Post holders will contribute significantly to advancing geriatric medicine services, collaborating closely with the Clinical Lead, Clinical Director, and Directorate Manager to ensure secure and excellent patient care services.

Clinical

Provision and delivery of consultant support for patients requiring acute care assessment and management

Ability to facilitate discussions and onward referrals for patients requiring investigations and/or specialist care

Support sub-speciality care within the acute medicine service

Support outpatient services such as general and sub-speciality consultant led clinics across both sites / where needed

Actively participate in MDTs and other meetings necessary to patient care

Support the clinical lead and clinical director with the development of acute medicine services across the hospital.

Administrative

  • Participate in local and national audit activities relevant to acute medicine
  • Attendance at clinical governance activities / meetings
  • Act as an educational and clinical supervisor for junior medical staff in training.

Research

Participate in existing clinical trials and research within the service

Working with research and innovation team assist with the recruitment of potential participants into future research studies

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Possess MRCP
  • Have spent either 3 years in Higher Training (or equivalent) or 5 years as a Specialist Registrar (or equivalent)
  • Hold a CCT and or be on the GMCs Specialist Register, or be within 3-6 months of being admitted to the GMCs Specialist Register

Desirable

  • Have been involved in academic research as part of their training and have both presented and published peer reviewed articles
  • Have spent a period of training in research in a discipline appropriate to their intended practice
  • Have undertaken additional training in acute medicine

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial NHS experience, specializing in Acute/General Internal Medicine.
  • Profound understanding of clinical governance and audit procedures.
  • Accomplished in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Proven track record in successfully leading research projects or improving end-of-life care delivery.

Desirable

  • Training in management.
  • Understanding of business planning and commissioning.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Management & Leadership skills
  • Be able to work as part of a team

Desirable

  • Have obtained a higher degree by thesis (MD, MCh, MSc)
  • Awareness of assessment / appraisal
