Job Opportunity: Locum Consultant Acute Medicine

We invite applications for the position of Locum Consultant in Acute Medicine. New consultants will enjoy 2.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) in their first year.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Applicants should hold GMC Specialist Registration or CCT / EU equivalent, with confirmation within six months.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide consultant services in the hospital, including illness prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and departmental functioning.
  • Cover out-of-hours duties and colleagues’ leaves.
  • Supervise junior medical staff, teach, engage in medical audit, Continuous Professional Development (CPD), and research.
  • Participate in Clinical Governance and potential managerial tasks.
  • Collaborate with the Trust for additional services as agreed.
  • A willingness to assume extra professional responsibilities.
  • Ensure equal treatment and cooperation as per Equal Opportunities Policy.


  • Candidates should possess MRCP, a CCT, and be listed on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of admission.
  • Proficiency in undergraduate teaching and general medicine is advantageous.
  • Encouragement for nurturing sub-specialty interests aligned with service priorities.
  • Post holders will significantly contribute to advancing geriatric medicine services, collaborating closely with the Clinical Lead, Clinical Director, and Directorate Manager to ensure secure and excellent patient care services.

Roles and Responsibilities:


  • Provision and delivery of consultant support for patients requiring acute care assessment and management.
  • Ability to facilitate discussions and onward referrals for patients requiring investigations and/or specialist care.
  • Support sub-specialty care within the acute medicine service.
  • Support outpatient services, including general and sub-specialty consultant-led clinics across both sites, as needed.
  • Actively participate in Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs) and other meetings necessary for patient care.
  • Support the Clinical Lead and Clinical Director in developing acute medicine services across the hospital.


  • Participation in local and national audit activities relevant to acute medicine.
  • Attendance at clinical governance activities and meetings.
  • Act as an educational and clinical supervisor for junior medical staff in training.


  • Participation in existing clinical trials and research within the service.
  • Work with the research and innovation team to assist with the recruitment of potential participants into future research studies.

Person Specification:



  • MRCP qualification.
  • Either 3 years in Higher Training (or equivalent) or 5 years as a Specialist Registrar (or equivalent).
  • Hold a CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register, or be within 3-6 months of being admitted to the GMC Specialist Register.


  • Involvement in academic research as part of their training, with both presentations and peer-reviewed article publications.
  • Training in research in a discipline appropriate to their intended practice.
  • Additional training in acute medicine.



  • Substantial NHS experience, specializing in Acute/General Internal Medicine.
  • Profound understanding of clinical governance and audit procedures.
  • Accomplished in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading research projects or improving end-of-life care delivery.


  • Training in management.
  • Understanding of business planning and commissioning.

Skills and Knowledge:


  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.


  • Attainment of a higher degree by thesis (MD, MCh, MSc).
  • Awareness of assessment and appraisal processes.
