A Paediatric Nurse (or Children’s Nurse) plays a key role in assessing the nursing needs of children up to adolescence age, taking into account their medical, social, cultural and family circumstances.

Paediatric nursing offers sensitive, family-focused care, supporting children through illness and recovery while promoting comfort, trust and reassurance.
Being able to communicate appropriately is a vital key skill for a paediatric nurse, along with the ability to show empathy and sensitivity when speaking with the children and their parents or carers. When working with young children, nurses are also highly skilled at being able to interpret their behaviour and reactions to assess them fully, as they won’t be able to explain how they’re feeling.
 

Paediatric Nursing is delivered in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, homes and in the community and will be part of a team made up of doctors, healthcare assistants, play staff, psychologists and social workers.
