Job Summary

The Registered General Nurse (RGN) is responsible for providing safe, compassionate, and person-centred nursing care to patients/residents in accordance with Irish nursing standards, clinical guidelines, and organisational policies. The role involves assessing patients’ needs, planning and delivering appropriate care, monitoring clinical conditions, administering medications, and working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality, person-centred nursing care to patients/residents.

• Carry out comprehensive nursing assessments and develop, implement, and evaluate individualised care plans.

• Monitor patients’ physical and emotional wellbeing and promptly identify and report changes in condition.

• Administer medications and treatments safely in accordance with prescribed instructions and local policies.

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date nursing documentation and clinical records.

• Perform clinical procedures within the nurse’s scope of practice and competence.

• Liaise effectively with doctors, healthcare assistants, allied health professionals, patients, and families.

• Support patients with activities of daily living while promoting dignity, independence, privacy, and choice.

• Follow infection prevention and control procedures and maintain a safe clinical environment.

• Respond appropriately to emergencies and deteriorating patient conditions.

• Participate in handovers, multidisciplinary meetings, audits, quality-improvement initiatives, and continuing professional development.

• Comply with relevant Irish legislation, professional standards, organisational policies, and nursing guidelines.

• Provide support and guidance to healthcare assistants and other members of the care team where appropriate.

• Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional and ethical standards at all times.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

• Current registration, or eligibility for registration, with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) as a Registered General Nurse.

• Recognised nursing qualification.

• Experience in a hospital, nursing home, community, or other healthcare setting is advantageous.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Good clinical assessment, documentation, and organisational skills.

• Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

• Commitment to patient safety, dignity, and high-quality care.

• Willingness to undertake ongoing professional education and training.
