Let PE Global help you build your career

Having returned home from Perth, Australia in October 2018 after 8 years away, I was fortunate enough to develop my career since returning, moving away from being a tradesman and taking the plunge into construction recruitment.  I admit  I think I made the right choice and feel the timing was perfect due to this latest construction boom taking off.

As reported by the Construction Federation Ireland, 2019 is shaping up to be another strong performance from the Construction sector here in Ireland.  If you took a stroll along the quays in Cork and Dublin, you will notice the rise in the number of cranes dominating the skylines, the growth is there for all to see.

For an industry that booms and busts in cycles, it is great to see and the knock-on effect it has across all industries which is great news for all businesses and services directly or indirectly benefiting from this growth.   By the end of 2018 the Construction industry recorded an economic output of €21 billion to the Irish economy employing nearly 145,500 workers by the end of 2018.

We are now midway into 2019 and investment continues to be positive and more projects are in the pipeline. The Construction Industry Federation Ireland now predict the sector to grow by a further 20% but the industry also has a number of challenges facing it today to keep it growing and also keep it sustainable.

Another key development in the construction industry is that construction expertise and services exports have increased by 22% to €1.97 billion over the last year. This increase was the largest recorded by any sector according to Enterprise Ireland.

The reason behind this significant increase is the world-class expertise construction companies have gained in the past decade. During the recession, construction products exports associated with Enterprise Ireland clients increased fivefold to nearly €2 billion. The CIF’s top 50 contractors generated an additional €2billion in services exports and this figure is increasing year on year. In other words, the quality and expertise of the Irish construction industry is now sought after internationally.

During the recession, construction companies internationalised as the domestic economy collapsed. We are now seeing a huge dividend in terms of export growth.  A key driver of export growth is our expertise in data centre construction. Dublin has about 24% of the entire EU’s data centre market, just 1% behind London.  Our expertise in this area and in Mechanical, Electrical and Civil engineering for example, is recognised globally.  Today’s figures show there is further transformative export growth potential in construction with a concerted effort from industry and Government.

With more skilled Irish construction expats now returning home due to the demand for more tradesmen the figures are only going to continue to rise. It is definitely an exciting time for the sector in Ireland and the key to it all is the sustainability aspect of it as it really starts to move away from the volatile boom and bust the industry once was.
