PE Global is recruiting for a Mechanical Engineer on behalf of our utilities client in Clare. This is a 12-month contract role.
Position Description
Our client are in the process of transitioning a power station primary fuel from coal to heavy fuel oil. The works require the construction of two new heavy fuel oil tanks, new auxiliary boilers, new ash injection system, upgrade of the existing HFO systems, ancillary systems and modifications to the existing site infrastructure.
They are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to manage the mechanical installation of two new 22MW auxiliary boilers onsite and associated tie-in works, including a purpose-built boiler house and associated exhaust stack and blowdown tank.
In addition, this role will dovetail with managing the mechanical installation of four new Ash Injection systems from receiving hopper to point of injection.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the Safety Adviser and other project team members to ensure that all works undertaken during the project are executed in accordance with statutory safety, health, and environmental regulations and internal Technical Standards & Guidelines
- Management of the main mechanical contracts and other Mechanical contracts / work scopes as assigned by the Project Manager, Mechanical Lead or Site Manager.
- Liaison with Engineering & Major Projects specialist team to successfully deliver projects in line with defined protocols and procedures.
- Manage Site teams (as required) and liaise with Station Mechanical teams.
- Support the implementation of Inspection & Test Plans (ITP) for the Mechanical aspects of the units, in conjunction with the appropriate Competent Person / Asset Management Specialist
- Management of quality in accordance with responsibilities listed in the Project Quality Plan.
- Day to day supervision and point of contact with contractors and their works. Review of key ITP protocol sheets
- Where required, work with and support the station Management and Maintenance Teams during the course of the project.
- Undertake regular safety, environment and quality audits during the construction and commissioning phases
- Reporting on progress against schedule and attendance at various project meetings as deemed appropriate by the Project Manager and / or the Site Manager.
- Work with the Project Manager to control costs for assigned contracts
- Management of special tooling requirements with the principal Contractor
- Development of technical specifications for work scopes on Mechanical plant and equipment and involvement in various stages of tendering and procurement process
- Use of plant modification process for all Mechanical plant modifications. Ensure all Mechanical procedures and drawings are updated
- Use of the Contractor Management (CM) process to manage assigned contracts including use of CM tools to track contract progress and holding of Kick-Off, Progress, Close-Out meetings, etc.
- Attendance at Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), workshop visits, if required
- Creation of Mechanical Close-Out Report
- Review of commissioning procedures and ensure implementation
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Minimum experience of 7 years (Post Qualification) in power generation industry
- Experience working on construction projects, particularly in the power generating industry
- Site experience on installation of mechanical plant, including, turbines, compressors, pumps, piping, tanks, valves etc
- Well versed with Health, Safety and Environment Standards and procedures
- Demonstrate an ability to work in a challenging environment driven by project deadlines.
- Highly innovative and motivated with an attention to detail.
- Ability to work and share knowledge and competencies within a team structure
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Flexibility which is important in all aspects of the role
- Strong report writing capability
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft office and project document management systems software
- Physically capable of carrying out duties of a site role. Mobilising around a construction site and carrying out required duties.
- Ability to work and share knowledge and competencies within a team structure.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

- Experience of working with utilities
Qualifications
Essential
- Experience of Power plant mechanical plant.
- Well versed with Health, Safety and Environment Standards and procedures
- Third level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
Desirable
- Engineer level 8 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- Chartered Engineer Status
