Why Engineering Talent Is Harder to Find Than Ever

Demand for engineers continues to grow

The organisation’s 2026 Engineering Barometer found that 66% of engineering employers planned to recruit during 2026. It also warned that extended recruitment timelines could affect the delivery of housing, transport, energy and water infrastructure.

The situation is equally competitive in the UK. EngineeringUK reported that engineering and technology roles accounted for approximately 19% of all UK jobs in 2025. Engineering and technology occupations also represent a disproportionately large share of job advertisements, demonstrating the intensity of employer demand.

Meanwhile, the Institution of Engineering and Technology found that 76% of engineering employers were struggling to recruit people with particular skills. Technical expertise and specialist sustainability capabilities were among the areas presenting the greatest challenges.

 

Engineering roles are becoming more specialised

 

One reason engineering talent is harder to find is that employers are not simply looking for an “engineer”. They are often searching for a professional with a very specific combination of qualifications, technical competencies and industry experience.

A pharmaceutical manufacturer may need a validation engineer with experience in commissioning, qualification and regulated Good Manufacturing Practice environments. A renewable energy business may require an electrical engineer who understands grid connections, energy storage and high-voltage infrastructure. Even when candidates have the correct engineering discipline, they may not have worked with the required systems, equipment, regulations or project environment.

This creates a narrower pool of suitable professionals. The strongest candidates must frequently demonstrate technical knowledge alongside project management, commercial awareness, communication, leadership and stakeholder-management skills.

Ireland’s National Skills Bulletin 2025 highlighted ongoing pressures across science, engineering and construction-related occupations. It specifically identified areas such as mechanical, electrical and automation engineering, while noting the growing importance of digitisation, artificial intelligence and green skills.

 

Technology is changing the skills employers need

 

Automation, artificial intelligence, digital twins, advanced analytics, robotics and smart manufacturing are changing how engineering work is completed.

Traditional engineering knowledge remains essential, but employers increasingly want professionals who can work confidently with digital tools and data-driven systems. Engineers may be expected to understand automation platforms, predictive maintenance, building information modelling, computer-aided design, process data or digitally connected production environments.

Sustainability is creating another layer of demand. Businesses need engineers who can improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, support circular production models and design infrastructure for a lower-carbon economy.

SOLAS has identified continued demand for engineers capable of supporting sustainable sourcing, energy efficiency, waste reduction and circular lifecycles. EngineeringUK has also reported substantial growth in job advertisements mentioning green skills and green engineering roles.

The result is a moving target. The skills required today are broader and more complex than those required for many comparable roles several years ago, while education and training pipelines cannot always adapt at the same speed.

 

Experienced engineers are not always active jobseekers

 

A job advertisement can reach candidates who are actively searching, but many of the strongest engineering professionals are passive candidates.

They may already be employed, progressing within their organisation or engaged on a long-term project. They are unlikely to apply for a role unless they receive a compelling and relevant opportunity.

This means employers are often competing for candidates who are considering several options rather than urgently seeking work. Salary remains important, but engineering professionals may also evaluate:

  • The technical challenge and scale of the work
  • Career progression and professional development
