The Role:

A Sexual Health Senior Medical Officer (Grade Code 183T) is required to provide short-term support to the HSE Sligo Sexual Health Clinic (SHC). The assignment is for 6 hours per week, for an initial period of 3 months, commencing July 1st 2025. The assignment will involve, though is not limited to, the Senior Medical Officer assisting the Consultant and medical and nursing staff in the delivery of the Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) service in the Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan area. The Senior Medical Officer will demonstrate clinical experience in the delivery of Sexual Health / GUM / STI.

 

Note that the duration of the requirement may be extended, subject to service needs.

 

Service Overview:

The Sexual Health Service in the North West (Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim) is a busy, community based that delivers free, safe, clinically effective and quality driven Genito-Urinary Medicine (GUM) to key at risk population groups in the North West, and beyond. It is a consultant led and supervised model in which nurses and Senior Medical Officers (SMOs) provide clinical care from 2 clinic sites – Sligo and Letterkenny. This includes the screening, diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

 

Role Description/Requirements:

 

The following role description (which is not exhaustive) serves as a guide for the work that will be undertaken by the Senior Medical Officer for Sligo SHC:

Operational

  • Attend the clinic at such times as specified.
  • Work with the Consultant and nursing staff to deliver the GUM service

 

Clinical

  • Sexual history taking
  • Male and female genital examination
  • Diagnosis and treatment of STIs and related conditions
  • Follow up and contact tracing of clients
  • Provision of health promotion in relation to healthy sexual practices
  • Provision of HIV PrEP, doxyPEP and relevant vaccinations
  • Maintenance of  appropriate clinical records in respect of all clients and ensure these are updated and on a regular basis
  • Provide all necessary direction to clinical staff as to the classification and treatment of clients

 

Hours of Work/Work base:

 

The Senior Medical Officer will work for 6 hours per week as follows:

  • Tuesdays from 1800 – 2100
  • Thursdays from 1800 – 2100
