Proving Test Technician

PE Global is currently recruiting for a Proving Test Technician on behalf of a leading global manufacturing and engineering organisation.

Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

Contract: 12 months, with potential to extend

Hours: 37 hours per week

Working Pattern: Monday–Thursday 8:00am–4:30pm, Friday 8:00am–1:00pm

Rate: £20.40 per hour PAYE

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Proving Test Technician to join a leading global engineering organisation’s Global Engine Development team

The successful candidate will support a busy Proving Test and Engineering function, working across a variety of powertrain installation, integration, shakedown and testing projects for off-highway machines.

This is a hands-on role combining mechanical, hydraulic and electrical/electronic activities, with exposure to both internal combustion and electric powertrain systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow health and safety policies and safe working practices at all times.
  • Follow documented standard work procedures to safely and accurately assemble parts and components using hand and power tools and lifting equipment.
  • Work from engineering instructions to install prototype, pilot and production powertrains into off-highway machines.
  • Operate a range of off-highway vehicles and machinery as required.
  • Instrument powertrain installations using thermocouples, pressure transducers, speed pickups and other sensors.
  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults on powertrains and machines.
  • Read and interpret electrical, mechanical and hydraulic engineering drawings.
  • Manufacture parts from engineering drawings using machining, welding, fabrication and electronics facilities where required.
  • Produce electrical looms to interface powertrain and machine systems.
  • Support machine repowering projects, including engine removal and replacement.
  • Assist with testing and validation activities.
  • Travel to off-site test and development facilities, including occasional overseas travel.
  • Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment in line with 5S and TPM principles.
  • Provide support across other areas of the business during periods of high workload, business-critical issues or staff shortages.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 4 years’ relevant experience within mechanical, engine testing, automotive, heavy machinery or a similar environment.
  • Strong mechanical, hydraulic and electrical/electronic aptitude.
  • Good working knowledge of engines, powertrains and machinery.
  • Hands-on experience within a workshop, testing or maintenance environment.
  • Experience with engine/mechanical testing, diagnostics and fault finding.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools, lifting equipment and welding equipment.
  • Good understanding of instrumentation and its application.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical and hydraulic drawings.
  • Willingness to undertake training and develop knowledge across different technical areas.

Experience in the following areas would be particularly beneficial:

  • Off-highway vehicles and construction machinery
  • Heavy goods vehicles
  • Automotive
  • Engine testing and development
  • Maintenance and repair
  • Rail or aerospace mechanical/testing environments
  • Manufacturing or production engineering

An engineering or motor mechanics apprenticeship and/or relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification would be desirable.
